Just a PSA
Jan. 14th, 2004 02:19 pmAs I have been friended by
fandom_scruples I thought I might get some curious people here, and decided I'd better make a statement about it. It's their perogative to friend me, and I'm not going to make a a stink about it. However.
When
arabe1la posted her rant on incest, I posted a comment that agreed with her. I am assuming that is why I have been friended, as I am not very well-known in the fandom at large. I neither write nor read NC-17 or incest fic. In fact, because of my personal beliefs, I avoid slash and almost everything above a PG-13 rating. I understand and believe that it is your right to post whatever you want. Many people on my own friends list write and post NC-17 fics. But I agree with Arabella when she said that to act in the most responsible manner would be to lock such fics behind a password or some other protected entry.
I know what people are going to say: It's not my responsibility to keep kids from reading this stuff, it's the parent's responsibility. You're right, it is the parent's responsibility. But you can't put the entire burden on them. It is entirely too easy to stumble across things, even with the most vigilant parent standing by. You should do all you can to keep questionable material away from children, and hope for parents to do the rest. I realize as well as you do that there are ways around every system, but you have to do what you can. A disclaimer is better than nothing, a "are you over 18" button is better, password protection is best. It is simply the responsible thing to do.
That being said, I do not agree with the idea of blacklisting or boycotting people who do not do these things. Once again, it is their preogative to do whatever they want. There is a difference between requesting more responsibility from the fandom and electing yourself to be judge and jury of who is being responsible. So while I agree, in theory, with
fandom_scruples, I do not agree with the approach that is being taken in this matter.
Now. Back to normal life.
