Western Governors University, a non-profit, competency-based online university headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, is seeking qualified professionals as short-term contractors to write test items for a language and communication assessment. Item writers will be trained by WGU staff and will be paid between $15-25 for each approved test item. Item writers may work from anywhere in the U.S. and determine their own hours.

Candidates should possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, although English, journalism, and communication are preferred. Candidates should have at least one year formal teaching or tutoring experience in English, grammar, or English as a Second Language for children or adults, or have written formal research papers, articles, essays, theses, or higher-level college writing in their programs. Candidates should have a strong independent work ethic, good writing and communication skills, and have the ability to meet strict deadlines.

Candidates who are current graduate students or have earned graduate degrees; candidates with three or more years of experience teaching middle school through adult classes in English, grammar, technical writing, or journalism; or candidates with three or more years of on-the-job experience applying English/grammar skills such as editing, technical writing, or related skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

For more information, contact Emily Bytheway at ebytheway@wgu.edu.

To apply, please e-mail a cover letter and résumé as an attachment to ebytheway@wgu.edu with the subject line “LCO Item Writer Application.” Please do not apply through the general WGU address.

Résumés must be submitted by Friday, March 4, 2005.

(This could be really great for a lot of you. We need quite a few writers for this area, so you have a good chance of being chosen! Most item writers average $25-30 an hour. Just ask [livejournal.com profile] lilac_bearry: it's a great opportunity!)

ETA: This is a completely new opportunity, separate from the one I posted about earlier. Although we're still accepting resumes for that one, too.

I know most of you don't live in Utah, but this is a cause that affects all of us.

Every year, KSL Radio runs a radiothon to raise money for Primary Children's Medical Center to help them provide medical care for children whose families cannot afford to pay for their services. This is a wonderful hospital and a wonderful cause. If any of you can find it in your hearts to donate some money-- anything you can afford-- the kids would really appreciate it.

You can donate online at KSL.com, or you can call any of the following numbers:

In Utah:

801-KSL-KIDS (801-575-5437)
Version or Cingular cell phone: #KIDS (#5437)

Outside of Utah:

1-800-762-7262 or 1-800-762-PCMC

They have lots of great incentives for certain pledge amounts, too: a $50 pledge means that they'll donate a stuffed moose to the hospital in your name, for instance, and sometimes they'll do a match period where your donation is automatically doubled. If you want to wait for such a period (I did, it made my $25 worth twice as much), you can listen online at KSL.com to hear when they're doing a match.

Please donate. The kids need your help!
